The Ultimate Steal is really a great deal that students should take advantage of. I bought my Office last year through this offer. The deal roughly lasts the entire school year – during winter break the deal is not valid so be sure to get your software soon. I just got a new laptop that has Windows 7. I want to get Microsoft Word 7 so I can type and work on my English. Why does the 'ultimate steal' come with so many other programs and won't they slow down my computer since its so much? And what is this with a CD for $13?? And a product key?? All I know is that by searching I have found that the website and product is legit, so I might get it. I recently had to format my PC, not through choice, and lost everything including Microsoft Office 2007. I got it via the Ultimate steal and they only offer download for up to 30 days after purchase.
If you’re a Windows user, you might have come across the 100% disk usage problem. Looking at the numbers in the task manager, it seems that your hard drive is doing some seriously hard work. In reality, your machine is sitting idle doing nothing but playing your favorite song. I don’t think the media player would be responsible for keeping your hard drive busy up to its full capacity. It’s been a long time since Microsoft released Windows 10, but you can still witness tons of reports with terms like Windows 10 disk usage 100.
I didn’t see the issue on my machine, at least, not in the last couple of years. Maybe, it might have gone unnoticed. But many people say their disk usage always touches 100%, and their machine slows down.

Anyway, I landed on this problem recently and thought I should dig more into it. After browsing through various forums and threads, I realized there is no particular cause to 100% disk usage problem in Windows, there are many. So, let’s tell you the reasons behind disk always touching the sky!
Ultimate Performance Windows 10
What causes 100% disk usage in Windows?
Many people have blamed applications like Google Chrome (I’m not surprised) and Skype which trigger some unwanted high disk usage on the machine. The list further extends to include features like Superfetch, Print Spooler, BITS, etc.
Disabling these services can help, but it may have consequences. For instance, if you cut off the Spooler, your printer won’t work until you re-enable it. And it doesn’t even guarantee that the problem would get resolved, but you have to take the shot.
The 100% disk usage problem can also occur if your system is infected with some malware. The very basic idea to fix the high disk usage problem is to spot the application or Windows component responsible and stop it.
How to fix 100% disk usage in Windows 10?
You can use the task manager in Windows 10 to find the applications and services that are consuming more disk resources. Under the Processes tab, click the Disk Usage column to arrange the numbers in descending order. Then you’ll know what application is trying to steal more than it deserves.
1. Fix 100% Disk Usage due to Google Chrome
In the case of Google Chrome, the web page pre-load feature is at fault. You can turn it off by visiting Settings > Show Advanced Settings > Privacy. Here, untick the option called Prefetch resources to load pages more quickly.
The newer versions of Chrome feature an entirely redesigned Security page. You can search for Use a prediction service to load pages more quickly toggle option under Privacy and security heading.

2. Fix 100% Disk Usage due to Skype
For Skype, the high disk usage goes down when write permission is granted for ALL APPLICATION PACKAGE group. Follow these steps to fix 100% disk usage issue if it’s because of Skype. This method is for the desktop version of Skype, not for the Windows Store version.
- Start with closing the Skype app. Right-click its icon in the taskbar and click Quit or you can use the Task Manager.
- Now, open This PC or My Computer and navigate to C:Program Files (x86)SkypePhone
- Right-click the file Skype.exe and go to Properties.
- Under the Security tab, select ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES and click Edit.
- On the next box that appears, select ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES, and tick Allow checkbox for Write permissions.
- Click OK to save and continue. Click OK again.
After making these changes, if Skype is responsible, you might observe a reduction in the disk usage when you open the task manager.
3. Fix 100% Disk Usage due to Windows features
A Redditor also suggested disabling the Windows Search service. Given the fact that the service is always running in the background, it might have some contribution to making the situation worse if not initiate it. It has been known to run “search loops” in Windows due to a bug. You can temporarily turn off (it’ll re-enable when you restart) Windows Search using the command line in Windows to see if it’s causing 100% disk usage.
There are many users, including me, who don’t use Windows Search that often. It’s probably due to the fact that today everything’s cloud-based and one rarely accesses the files stored on the disk. Lithgow enfield serial numbers. If that’s the case with you, feel free to disable Windows file search and enjoy a faster experience.
Open Command Prompt as administrator and use the following command:
net.exe stop “Windows Search”
Use this command to start Windows again:
net.exe start “Windows Search”
How to turn off Windows Search?
- Press CTRL + R to open the Run utility.
- Type services.msc and press Enter.
- Now, look for Windows Search in the list.
- Right-click the Windows Search service and go to Properties.
- Under the General tab, set the Startup type to Disabled.
- Click Ok to save and continue.

chkdsk.exe /f /r - Now type Y to confirm the disk check during the next restart.
- Now during next restart, disk check utility will run. Now check the disk usage again in Task Manager to see if the problem has been fixed.
7. Fix your StorAHCI.sys driver
Windows 10 Ultimate Power Mode
Another cause for your hard drive going full capacity is a firmware bug in Microsoft AHCI driver called StorAHCI.sys. It’s known to cause the 100% hard disk problem and even BSODs in Windows. Follow these steps to disable Message-Signaled Interrupts support for the driver and fix the issue:
- Open Device Manager (Right-click This PC > Manage > Device Manager).
- Extend the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers entry in the list.
- Right-click Standard SATA AHCI Controller and go to Properties.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetEnumPCI
Look for the value you saw in the Properties and expand the relevant key. Make sure you expand the correct key. - Once you have found the correct AHCI Controller using the given string, navigate to:
Device ParametersInterrupt ManagementMessageSignaledInterruptProperties - Here, double-click MSISupported and change it’s value to 0 (means turn off the MSI).
- Click OK to save the value. Close Windows Registry and restart your machine.
8. Disable Adobe Flash to fix 100% disk usage
Adobe Flash is already counting the days for its extinction. The software has always blamed for many vulnerabilities and loopholes it possesses. But it’s also associated with the 100% disk usage in Windows.
Despite the wave of HTML5, some people still use Flash on their system because many applications run on it. And if you’re one of the Flash users experiencing high disk usage, you might consider disabling Adobe Flash to see if it’s at fault or not.
9. Check for some evil software on your computer
Windows 10 Ultimate Download
It might be possible that some malware is responsible for consuming 100% HDD resources on your computer. Try running a full scan using the inbuilt Windows Defender, or take the help of some third party software.
10. Reset virtual memory for 100 disk usage fix
You might have come across the term virtual memory while reading about the RAM management in Windows 10. When your computer’s RAM isn’t enough for processes, Windows stores files in the virtual memory and keeps swapping them to RAM when needed. You can also reset Windows 10 virtual memory to fix high disk usage.
You can read this existing article on Fossbytes.com and follow the steps mentioned to fix Windows 10 slow performance.
If every road is taking you nowhere, then the last option would be to reset your Windows OS. It might be time-consuming but can help if your daily usage is getting affected due to the issue.

Windows 10 Ultimate Boot Disk
- #2Both are the upgrade version in licensing terms (i.e. you need to have Vista or XP pre-installed). But that doesn't stop you from doing a clean install of Windows 7.
The disc kit is simply a backup DVD of windows - e.g. if your windows installation gets corrupted you can't reinstall using the download option - you would have to use the CD. - #3Looks like these are both upgrades. Which is a problem only if you do not have any operating system on a pc where you want to install it. If you have XP or Vista on that machine, you'll be fine.

Lovely. thanks for that. i wasn't sure if you could do a clean install with an upgrade version.
if you do a clean install how does it know you've got windows xp or windows vista pre-installed and you're not just installing windows 7 on a custom built computer with no operating system? wouldn't it invalidate your product key? - #5It has an access to the disc, so it can check if anything is on it. I do not know how thorough is that check, but it could without problems find out even if the current OS is activated, too. And as for the downloaded version, it's just a bunch of files that you have to start from existing Windows installation. You could make a bootable DVD from it, but for many people it's an obstacle big enough to mess with even without any additional checks.

- #7I bought, and downloaded the Student Windows 7 Professional from that website, and I converted the .BOX and setup files into an ISO. I then burnt that to a disc, and it worked a charm.
That way, you can do the clean install, rather than a simple upgrade. - #8Actually you do not need an existing OS installed to install Windows7 just google 'Windows 7 double install trick' and you'll find you can (legitimately) install Win7 with just an upgrade disc. Microsoft don't block this method either

I installed the professional version on my PC after I had formatted it?
I didn't put the Windows 7 disc in so it could check if I had an eligible OS that is upgradeable? - #10I downloaded the upgrade only version, but when I converted it to ISO, burnt it to disc, and booted it up, I could do a clean install..
- #11I downloaded the upgrade only version, but when I converted it to ISO, burnt it to disc, and booted it up, I could do a clean install..
I did a clean install without doing any kind of ISO conversion. Just used the box files and the .exe to run it all. Because if you have Vista HP and buy 7 Pro, you have to do a clean install anyway. - #12Actually you do not need an existing OS installed to install Windows7 just google 'Windows 7 double install trick' and you'll find you can (legitimately) install Win7 with just an upgrade disc. i think you are stretching the word legitimately there.
it is technically possible, but it is by no means legitimate. the two are not the same. - #13i think you are stretching the word legitimately there.

Indeed, while you can clean install Windows 7 onto a blank hard drive with the upgrade version this way, you'll only be legitimately licenced if you own a valid licence for Windows XP or Vista that was registered to that PC. (i.e. the copy of Vista or XP you've 'upgraded' from is not in use on any other PC.) - #14
I was using the Windows 7 Ultimate RC before I installed Windows 7 Professional. I didn't even check if I could simply upgrade, because I prefer clean installs. Plus, I didn't think you could do a clean install/format while the OS was in use on that disc/partition.I did a clean install without doing any kind of ISO conversion. Just used the box files and the .exe to run it all. Because if you have Vista HP and buy 7 Pro, you have to do a clean install anyway. - #15You cannot in-place upgrade from Win7 RC, you have to do a clean install. That means they only have to have an upgrade for Vista only. Less work, less testing. You need Anytime Upgrade to upgrade between final editions of W7. As for the install of W7 on a clean machine with an upgrade disc I always had a feeling that MS attitude was 'if you can do it you earned it'. The same with installing OEM versions of W7 by end users. The bottom line is W7 is spreading.
- #16Looks like these are both upgrades. Which is a problem only if you do not have any operating system on a pc where you want to install it. If you have XP or Vista on that machine, you'll be fine.
Iwas going to ask how one went about installing full windows 7 on a vista installed machine!!!
Thanks:) - #17The Ultimate Steal version is an upgrade version. However, you can follow steps on how to create it into an ISO, make it bootable and burn it to disc. This way, you can use it as a clean install. It is what I did with my version, and it's worked wonders.
- #18Iwas going to ask how one went about installing full windows 7 on a vista installed machine!!!
Thanks:)
You have a choice to do in-place upgrade or a clean install, look at the following table:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd772579(WS.10).aspx
In addition to it, you must go from 32bit to 32bit or from 64bit to 64bit.
In-place upgrade means you do not have to re-install your applications. Dowside is that the upgrade may take several hours and there might potentially be a problem with some application(s).
If you cannot or do not want to do in-place upgrade, you do clean install. The installation will take ~30 minutes, but then you have to reinstall your applications and restore your data.
It's good to backup your data in both cases, just to be sure. For the clean install you can use Windows Easy Transfer, it will backup/restore user data/settings as they were on Vista.
I did both, both worked fine for me, but in the end I did clean install to get rid of some clutter installed by OEM I wanted to get rid of, but it would not uninstall - #19The copy of Professional I got was a full version, not an upgrade.
- #20This student thing for £30..do you actually need to be a student?
Would you get a legit download copy with key? - #210
- #22Looks like these are both upgrades. Which is a problem only if you do not have any operating system on a pc where you want to install it. If you have XP or Vista on that machine, you'll be fine.
I bought the upgrade version a few days after it launched to upgrade XP that was on my machine. However I had to do a clean install and when it came to validating it came up with an error message. There is a fix to this that can be obtained by searching the internet.
Therefore the upgrade version is best, it is cheaper, the same as a full retail version and can be tweeked so it can register with MS. - #23
My version of professional came as 2x .BOX files and 1x setup file. I needed to convert it to ISO to be able to to a clean install. The copy of Professional I got was a full version, not an upgrade.
As for getting the student edition, you do need to have a valid .ac.uk email address. - #24I think you must have ac.uk email address.
I believe that is the case. If you have an extra £20 you can obtain Ultimate from www.software4students.co.uk without a .ac.uk address (although you have to be a student of one of the relevant institutions). - #25I was using the Windows 7 Ultimate RC before I installed Windows 7 Professional. I didn't even check if I could simply upgrade, because I prefer clean installs. Plus, I didn't think you could do a clean install/format while the OS was in use on that disc/partition.
What I did was slightly different. I copied the exe and box files over to an external hard drive. I made sure booting from USB was enabled in my BIOS settings. I than ran the exe whilst I was still in Vista - this did some things - e.g. unpacking the box files etc.
At one stage it did reboot and went into the windows installation process. I guess because the files were on a separate disk and partition to my Vista installation this was ok. I then used the installation process to create a secondary partition on my computer on which I installed Win7 as I have some specialist software which I wasn't sure would run on Win7 (lucky as it turns out, it's highly unstable in win7 so I still use Vista for that thing).
I do believe however if I had wanted to do a clean install over my Vista installation my method would still have worked. This is because the windows installation loads itself into RAM kind of like a Linux live CD.
I bought two copies of the upgrade for different PCs and one disc kit. I think the disc kit is worth it for the £8 as then your installation options increase. e.g. if your windows got corrupted by a trojan or something.
