The best way to connect an Oracle 8.1.7 and higher is through Instant Client. Download Instant client 10.2 from oracle site, copy all files in the same folder where.NET assemblies resides and use classes located in System.Data.OracleClient. This work for me in.NET 4 project and oracle DB 8.1.7 server.

2. Thanks DrSOL, I download 10.1.0.4 version from metalink. However, when I install it, the oracle said 'If you attempt to install this patch set in an Oracle home directly that does not contain an Oracle Database 10 release 1(10.1.0.x) instatllation, then Oracle Universal Installer display's a warning dialog with the following message.

Oracle Database 10g Release 2. The installation package are included Enterprise and Standard editions.
